Chimney

We have a 78-year old chimney, with mortar crumbled to dust. This leads to several problems: carbon monoxide leaks, mortar dust sifting to the basement floor, and plaster damage in the house when the rains get in. We tried to get a chimney cap installed but there wasn't anything solid to work with. And we discovered getting a chimney rebuilt isn't cheap--and it would still only be redone from the roofline up.

So, the Chimney Doctor (shown here :-) offered a solution. He took down the chimney to the roofline, installed a liner to encapsulate all the gases, and decked in the roof where the chimney was. (We have leftover shingles in the garage, making that a simpler project.)

Alas for my purist sensibilities, we now have no (visible) chimney. But we have a safe and weatherproof house, and I can live with that.

P.S. Perhaps I should mention that we have no fireplace--the only users of the chimney are the furnace and water heater.
