Open House Day

First we went to a Back to School open house event.  Kids got free haircuts, face painting, art and games, hot dog lunches, and a free backpack filled with school supplies.

Then we went to an open house at Tacoma Rail, where Parker requested a handlebar mustache at the face painting table.

We toured a caboose and an engine.

Parker got to drive a train simulator.  If you look at his screen, you can see that his first attempt ended in a major derailment.  He amended his driving, and the man said he was the best driver all day, and gave him a railways pin.

Last but certainly not least, we got a ride around the railyards.  Tacoma Rail is a switching line, not a mainline, meaning they take delivery of trains, then split them up and deliver bits of them as directed.  So our tour on their lines took us right next to the gantry cranes that load/unload cargo ships at the Port.  It was really interesting!
